Murphy by Samuel Beckett [Audiobook | Section 2 of 13]
A slightly dramatic reading or audiobook of one of the most brilliant novels ever written: Murphy by Samuel Beckett. It is exceptionally difficult but not as unmanageable as Joyce's Ulysses. It is a weird piece of fiction filled with myriad scholarly references and extremely erudite wit.
The full audiobook will be available eventually. Here is the playlist of uploaded sections (13 total): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFKzxHLtthEC2EItmkFBbd2vX5APP_53V

Episode 43 - Watt the Hell?: Samuel Beckett's Watt (Guest: Catherine Flynn
In this installment of the Books of Some Substance podcast, Nick is joined by University of California-Berkeley English Professor Catherine Flynn to dissect the endless permutations of Samuel Beckett’s oft-overlooked Watt. Is there meaning behind Sam’s lists upon lists upon lists? Is this a reality more real than realism itself? And will there be an opportunity for Nick to —most predictably — use the term “post-post-post modern”?
To language, we raise our glass, and descend into the Schopenhauerian darkness . . . but with a few delightful aphorisms destined for refrigerator magnets along the way.

Barry McGovern talks to us about Watt. The extraordinary story of an itinerant character who one day walks from a train station to the home of Mr. Knott whom he will serve. The bizarre adventures of Watt and his struggle to make sense of the world around him are told with verbal elegance, immense pathos and fierce humor.

Samuel Beckett. Watt. First edition, one of just 25.
Senior modern literature specialist Adam Blakeney inspects this first edition of Watt by Samuel Beckett.
It is one of just 25 lettered copies printed on handmade paper each signed by the author. The smallest limitation of any of the author’s major works and a rarity on the market.
An excellent copy, housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery.

Samuel Beckett - threne heard by Watt
A multi-track performance of the song heard by the eponymous character of Samuel Beckett’s novel 'Watt' as he is lying in a ditch on the way to and from Mr Knott’s house.
Beckett included a skeleton score of the mysterious mixed choir's song in the main body of the novel. It details the rhythmic arrangement of the threne but not its harmonic or melodic structure (although the soprano melody is later given in the novel's Addenda).
For research purposes (and out of pure curiosity!) I created a multi-track recording of all four parts to hear how they fit together. I digitally altered my voice to give some idea of the bass, tenor, alto and soprano parts, and I chose not to sing the soprano melody from the Addenda, focusing instead on the rhythms and chant-like qualities of the song.

To language, we raise our glass, and descend into the Schopenhauerian darkness . . . but with a few delightful aphorisms destined for refrigerator magnets along the way.

who may tell the tale
of the old man?
weigh absence in a scale?
mete want with a span?
the sum assess

nothingness
in words enclose?
The author of Waiting for Godot reads this poem of his novel Watt in a rare document. Now you can read the text while you listen his own voice.
